Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
